Abstract

'Barbaric'. This word, used by a professor of psychiatric nursing in anarticle in this month’s Mental Health Practice, grabbed my attention when I first read his paper. For Professor Kevin Gournay’s article (see pages 20-22) does not analyse some brutal treatment meted out to disturbed people with mental health problems in past centuries. In fact, he is referring to a practice that is commonplace in mental health units across the country today – namely, inflicting pain on patients in order to restrain them and enforce their compliance.
