Abstract

The annual volumes of Biographical Memoirs are one of the Society's most popular and widely read publications, mostly by Fellows themselves and others with scientific interests, but also including some lay readers. Bringing together 20 or more good quality memoirs each year has been a time–consuming job for the Physical Secretary and for those involved in editing and producing each volume. In addition, the Society has wanted to take full advantage of all the technical developments available for attractive, speedy and accurate accounts. One such obvious development was the colour dust–cover to the 2007 publication (volume 53) with mini–photographs of some of the Society's most distinguished Fellows, including the Nobel prize winners Dorothy Hodgkin and Maurice Wilkins, as well as Isaac Newton, James Cook and Christopher Wren. Another important development is that individual memoirs are now published online throughout the year as theyare received, to the same high standards as the printed versions, so that readers no longer need to wait for print publication. There is alsothe facility to search and browse the Biographical Memoirs online digital archive dating back to 1932.
