Abstract

How long do you expect it will be before some college or university, together with a major publisher, packages a set of online curriculum materials that blows your socks off? We've seen textbooks grow into a forest of materials -- the textbook itself, a study guide, an instructor's manual, a set of transparencies, one or more test banks, etc. Will it really be much of a leap to package these materials into a spiffy distance-learning format? We've seen many colleges and universities offer courses, programs, and entire degree offerings in an online format. Is it much of a leap to imagine one aggressive school seeking to capture the market? We know that professional organizations frequently make recommendations on curricular guidelines; the more such guidelines are adopted the more the image of the organization is enhanced, which naturally leads to greater adoption of the guidelines. So is it much of a leap to imagine an organization officially endorsing one set of online curriculum materials, in exchange for, say a royalty fee paid for each student participant?
