Abstract

Abstract Ten years ago, Soviet Education presented a triple issue devoted to the centennial celebration of Lenin's birth in April 1870. The articles for translation were selected from a wide range of Russian journals in education and philosophy. The tone of each article was decidedly hagiographic. Not only was the legacy of Lenin's writings cited as the principal theoretical foundation of Soviet pedagogy: his own education and youth were cited as the ideal upon which the upbringing of contemporary Soviet young people should be modeled. As was noted in the editorial introduction to the issue, "In Soviet society Lenin is not merely a great leader of past history. He is a present source of strength, ideologically and politically, and most important — morally and pedagogically."
