Abstract

An essential segment of intelligent manufacturing is the continuous development of tool geometry. One determinative component of tool geometry is the analysis of the relationship between edge geometry and surface quality. The geometrical inspection of the tool edge during operation can be carried out under specific boundary conditions. The subject of the present paper is to investigate the edge geometry of a machining tool with two CCD cameras based on descriptive geometry principles. The mathematical determination of the positions of the two CCD cameras is presented in this paper to position the tool and to ensure the reconstruction of the cutting edge curve from its two images. The correct evaluation of manufacturing accuracy during operation is supported in an exact geometrical way by the method developed for the wear testing of the cutting edge of the tool.
