Abstract

In Vigo County, Indiana, USA, 14,610 ectoparasites and phoretic mites from the Southeastern Shrew, Sorex longirostris , and the Masked Shrew, S. cinereus , included 31 species; 24 species were found on each shrew. The glycyphagid mite Orycteroxenus soricis and Myobiidae accounted for 90.2% and 93.1% of the ectoparasites and phoretic forms on S. longirostris and S. cinereiis , respectively. The occurrence of fleas and the myobiid mite Protomyobia americana on S. cinereus only and the myobiid Protomyobia indianensis on S. longirostris only was the most prominent difference between the ectoparasitic faunas of the 2 shrews.
