Abstract

Eastern Cottontail rabbits from 11 southeastern slates were examined for ectoparasites. The most prevalent arthropods were Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, Ixodes dentatus, Cediopsylla simplex , and Odontopsyllus multispinosus . Nine additional ectoparasite species were found at low prevalence rates, viz., Amblyomma americanum, Dermacentor variability Ixodes scapularis, Trombicula sp., Tricholipeurus parallelus, Cuterebra sp., Euhoplopsyllus glacialis affinis, Nosopsyllus fasciatus , and Pulex sp. The survey revealed that ticks were prevalent throughout the year and that flea infestations were highest in winter and spring and lowest in summer.
