Abstract

Economic sociology examines the social and cultural factors that condition economic behavior. Max Weber's analysis of the impact of Protestantism on capitalism is a classic illustration. Another example in modern sociology is network analysis. Although economic sociology is a recognized field in the social sciences, there is considerable overlap with the sociology of occupations, sociology of work and jobs, and institutional analysis generally. This entry traces the development of the subject from the early economic theories of Adam Smith to the present day.
