Naval Engineers JournalVolume 77, Issue 1 p. 69-76 ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS IN ESTABLISHING AN OVERHAUL CYCLE FOR SHIPS—AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS COMMANDER R. E. APPLE U.S.N., COMMANDER R. E. APPLE U.S.N. Ret. R. E. Apple graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943 with a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering and from the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School in 1948 with an M.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His 21 years of commissioned service in the U.S. Navy through the rank of Commander included 15 years of Engineering Duty. His experience included design, research, operation and repair on a large variety of surface vessels and hydrofoils, terminating with three years on the staff of Commander Cruiser-Destroyers, Atlantic Fleet as Assistant Maintenance Officer. In June 1964 he retired from the Navy and joined the naval architectural and marine engineering firm of M. Rosenblatt & Son as Assistant to the President.Search for more papers by this authorDR. DONALD E. FARRAR, DR. DONALD E. FARRAR Donald E. Farrar graduated from Harvard College in 1954, and from the Harvard University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences with a Ph.D. in Economics in 1961. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin and is currently Assistant Professor of Finance at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since 1962 he has been associated with economic aspects of Naval and Maritime Investment through the Institute of Naval Studies, Center for Naval Analyses, of the Franklin Institute of Pennsylvania.Search for more papers by this author COMMANDER R.
