Abstract

The issues raised in this paper are common to, and indeed help to define, the area of study: the Indian subcontinent, the IndoChinese peninsula, and insular Southeast Asia. Many of these issues are also common, with progressively increasing degrees of difference, to most of the non-Western and economically underdeveloped world, as those terms are generally understood.
