Abstract
AN interesting picture of economic adjustment of a primitive people to complicated foreign civilization is reflected in the accounts of the earliest voyagers to the Hawaiian Islands. In spite of the death of Cook, the murder of Hergest and Gooch, and the Metcalf disasters, the period between 1778 and the chaotic sweeping away of the old culture was very apparently, on the whole, one of intelligent and harmonious adaptation.
