Abstract
The role played by the Royal Observatory in eclipse expeditions to observe the Sun's chromosphere and corona is briefly summarized. Eclipse work on the Moon's place (not always involving expeditions) is then dealt with, culminating in the author's cinematographic method which was used successfully at Mombasa in 1948.
