Abstract

Functional constipation affects a signifi cant part of the world population: about 20% of French population is concerned. Lifestyle changes are fi rstly recommended to patients before drugs prescription. Suffi cient fi bers and water intakes are highly recommended to improve intestinal transit. Beyond water intakes, mineral composition of water has also an impact. Studies point out that consumption of sulfate-rich mineral waters have laxative effect, without diarrhea occurrence.Recently, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial has analyzed effects of a highly-mineralized water, rich in magnesium and sulfate, on intestinal transit. The study included 244 women suffering from functional constipation and the results have shown a decrease of constipation from the second week of treatment and a signifi cant decrease of drugs consumption.
