Abstract
The design of earthquake resistant water tanks in highly earthquake prone region is presented in this article. The design is very simple and also it is very effective. The shape of the elevated storage reservoirs is made like a dumbbell. Where in the top tank is used for storage of water and the bottom underground tank is used for filling the sand. Because of this provision the centre of gravity of the complete system of dumbbell shaped water tank will shift towards bottom. As well as the sand filled in the bottom tank will act as a damper. So it increases the earthquake performance, hence such water tanks can be used in highly earthquake prone regions.
