Abstract

The article discusses the earthquake of February 13, 2020 with a magnitude of Mw=6.9, which occurred in the Frieze Strait between the islands of Iturup and Urup of the Kuril Island arc. The earthquake source is located in the lower part of the double seismofocal zone at intermediate depths. The earthquake was realized under conditions of deviatoric tension, the direction of the axis approximately coinciding with the direction of submergence of the tectonic plate. The azimuthal hodograph method allowed us to establish that there was a uni directional rupture of the northeastern direction, coinciding with the strike of the subvertical plane of the focal mechanism. The maximum macroseismic effect of the earthquake in the settlements of the Kuril Islands reached 5–6 points on the MSK-64 scale. The macroseismic effect was observed at significantly greater epicentral distances in the south-west direction from the epicenter. The maximum intensity in Japan reached 4 points on the JMA scale, which corresponds to 6–7 points on the MSK-64 scale.
