Abstract

Geosynthetics have been used for reinforcing foundations. The technology was mainly invented and developed in the West, but development of the technology has been carried out in the East as well. The short history in the East is introduced in connection with that in the West. Steel nets were placed on the seabed to reinforce the soft foundation and to separate the soft clay foundation and the stone bund for the construction of the artificial island in Kyusha between 1949 and 1951. The steel nets were replaced by geotextiles after the disasters in the Netherlands and Japan in 1953 and 1959. Geonets and geogrids were invested in the UK and introduced to Japan where Professor T. Yamanouchi researched those new materials.
