Abstract
Larger artificial island is difficultly to construct on the soft soil foundation. In order to keep the strength of growth of the soil due to the consolidation of soft clay layers on the soil foundation, reduce the settlement of the island body and maintain the stability of the whole structure under the effect of weight of the filled materials, it is very important to control the loading during construction. A back-feed analysis method is put forward based on the software Abaqus to construct the artificial island safely. According to this method, the construction procedure is divided into several steps. The settlement and displacement of the island are keeping monitored throughout the construction procedure. The settlement and pore water during the first construction step are calculated using Abaqus with the parameters obtained from field investigation and laboratory tests before construction. The measured data will then be used to check the accuracy of the soil parameters for calculation. With the modified parameters, the displacement and pore water pressure will be estimated at the next step. This procedure is repeated until the construction is accomplished. The island has been successfully construction following the presented approach. The details of the construction procedure are put forward in this paper.
