Abstract

The first stages of growth of small silver clusters are studied using pulse radiolysis. In solutions containing silver ions only, dimmer and trimer silver clusters are observed. The trimer silver cluster can also be observed in solutions containing additional metal ions, such as Zn2+ or Cd2+. During irradiation, the respective monovalent cations are the first intermediates. Zn+ reduces silver by electron transfer, while Cd+ forms first a mixed-metal cluster.
