Abstract

Abstract Sprays were applied dilute by handgun operating at 200 psi to 10-yr-old Newton and 30-yr-old Red Delicious trees. Treatment rates given assume a spray volume of 400 gal/acre. Treatments consisted of 3 single-tree replicates. Each tree was sprayed to the drip point. A standard insect and disease control program was applied to the whole block (3 cover sprays of Guthion, Bayleton against mildew, Cyprex against apple scab). Hatch of overwintering ERM eggs had reached 67% when sprays were applied. On each tree, leaves were sampled on 3 scaffold limbs from the center to the periphery of the canopy (25 leaves/tree; 75/treatment). Mites were removed from leaves with a mite brushing machine onto a sticky glass plate and then counted under a stereo microscope. Leaf samples were taken 1 wk after treatment and every 2 wk from then on until the end of Jul.
