Abstract
This article gives an overview on gastric cancer, focusing in particular on the most frequent type of malignancy in the stomach—gastric adenocarcinoma. Bacterial infection with Helicobacter pylori is today the biggest risk factor of developing this carcinoma. The epidemiology and pathobiology, along with its risk factors, are discussed.Hereditary gastric cancer is rare, but family predisposition can increase the risk. Treatment options include endoscopic management in early disease, and surgical and medical management in more advanced disease. Early detection is crucial; however, organized screening is only being used in Japan and Korea. Better screening tests are highly warranted.
