Abstract

At the present time black walnut is the most important timber tree in Kansas. Kansas is one of the top states in walnut growing stock volume. The last recorded year, 1963, showed Kansas second only to Indiana in the production of walnut logs for veneer. As this demand for walnut increases, better management along with shorter rotations will be needed. This will also entail much more planting in the future. Care should be taken so that the future plantings are of the highest quality. Hence provenance testing is necessary. This will help insure that the trees planted will be genetically superior in order to meet future demands for quality, volume, rotation, and in general, overall performance. Provenance testing is based on the premise that native sources may not perform as well as introduced sources. Thus a number of seeds, cuttings, or seedlings are collected from various geographic locations
