Abstract

1. 1. An experimental model using subjects who have high levels of trait anxiety and who are then stressed by having to perform a mirror-drawing test (MDT) was used for detecting antianxiety activity of drugs. 2. 2. Twenty volunteer men were used as subjects for such a model, each receiving either a single dose of 5 mg of diazepam or a single dose of placebo. The model clearly distinguished the drug from placebo, the former preventing the decrement in performance introduced by the MDT. 3. 3. These same subjects were later tested in the same model, after short and longer intervals. The model was then no longer sensitive to detecting antianxiety drug effects, due to the prior learning. 4. 4. This experimental model for testing antianxiety drugs is sensitive, but subjects tested in it can only be used once.
