Abstract
Early engineering education in China has influenced later practice. This article takes the Fuzhou Shipping School as a case study, examining it status, basic characteristics, and impact on engineering education in China during the Westernization Movement. It shows how engineering education incorporated practice that influenced other aspects of Chinese society, and suggests a general framework for understanding the development of subsequent engineering education in China.
