Abstract

Hedwig Eleonora's ambitions as a patron of the arts is analysed through her hitherto unknown private book collection. The list of books not only presents areas of interests but also a circle of scholars, advisers, relatives, and friends along with patterns and traditions of patronage. This list of books is analysed in reference to how her conscious patronage is displayed in for example paintings. I will argue that the list of books not only reveals that Hedwig Eleonora, one of Sweden's most significant early modern patrons, privately owned a small library, but also that it mirrors her role as a patron of the arts in a larger cultural and historical perspective.
