Abstract
Codimension-two bifurcation problems have been considered to account for spontaneous polarization symmetry breaking and polarization symmetry restoration in an anisotropic dye laser with a saturable absorber. In spite of the symmetry with respect to the cavity axis distribution of the excited molecules and isotropic cavity, polarized laser output has been observed in the form of asymmetric steady state operation, auto-oscillations and chaos. Polarization symmetry is restored when the attractors' coupling strength (orientational relaxation and pumping rate) increases.
