Abstract

Abstract The characteristic excitations of incommensurate phases have first been studied for systems with a two-component order parameter (n = 2). One finds one phason branch relative to the excitation of the phase of the incommensurate modulation wave and one amplitudon branch relative to the excitation of its amplitude [Currat, 1990]. In incommensurate phases beyond n = 2 one expects a corresponding increasing of the number of characteristic excitation branches.
