Abstract

We discuss some new dynamical models of earthquake and crack propagation. For the earthquake model, it is pointed out thet the instability caused by a velocity weakening friction law gives the system chaotic time development and a scaling behavior even when the system is totally uniform and deterministic. For the model of crack propagation, we demonstrate that dissipation can play an important role in the crack propagation by solving the model analytically.
