Abstract A subset of the Karachentsev galaxy-pair catalog has been identified, using geometric and velocity criteria, which must be undergoing either direct or retrograde encounters. Rotation curves have been used to define the sense of disk rotation in each case and thus the orbital sense of each companion. A significant difference in orbital properties appears between direct and retrograde encounters, such that direct companions are moving systematically faster than retrograde ones. This is interpreted as evidence of more circular orbits in retrograde cases, perhaps indicating that such orbits are less strongly modified during tidal encounters than are direct ones. The difference between direct and retrograde companions is likely to reflect differential dynamical evolution, so that the properties of companion orbits now have a nearly bimodal distribution. Any difference in energy transfer between pairs of different orbital senses requires either relatively low halo masses, so that the disk is dynamically significant, or that the halo rotates in the same direction as the disk.
