Abstract
Pion correlations in the hadronization process are studied. A distinction is made between “dynamical”, due to the mechanism of the fragmentation scheme, and Bose-Einstein correlations, due to the statistics. It is found that in a string hadronization model not based on the usage of fragmentation functions, the dynamical correlations are at least as important as statistical correlation for identical charged pions. Other correlation functions are dominated by resonance decay. The importance of dynamical correlations imply that a pure chaotic assumption for the hadronization process is not applicable and thus that observed correlations should not be interpreted as measuring the spatial and temporal extent of sources. Comparisons are made with data from hadronic (e +, e −) annihilation.
