Abstract

The development of slip lines during propagation of the narrow Lüdersband front on thin flat Cu-15 and 30 at%Zn single crystals is recorded at room temperature. A variation of growth rate in step height by many orders of magnitude is found and explained by local bending stresses and by local work hardening. On cylindrical Cu-10 at%Al crystals at elevated temperatures (260 - 320°) the rapid growth of slip band bundles during load drops in the range of the Portevin - LeChatelier effect could be recorded. Finally some first observations on the growth of slip bands on polycrystalline specimens (α-brass) are reported.
