Abstract

The azimuth angle of the plane of polarization of linearly polarized light is measured accurately by an electro-optically modulated opto-electronical device. The two ac output signals show up a phase difference which is linearly dependent on the azimuth angle. Continuously changing azimuth angles can be measured within 1 degree or better; changes in the azimuth angle as fast as 3 × 10 4 rad/sec are easily followed by the detection electronics.
