Abstract

Presented herein is a design model which may be employed to estimate the life of a nonuniformly supported surface acted upon by a translating cylinder when the latter is subjected to periodic loadings. The Lundberg-Palmgren theory of contact fatigue is employed in conjunction with a modified finite element method thereby allowing the prediction of fatigue life for a roller track system. First, a method is advanced using the finite element analysis technique by which pressure resulting from the contact of a roller and a track with nonuniform back-up supports may be determined, next, the basic dynamic capacity rating of the track system, equivalent fatigue load ratings, and reliability fundamentals are reviewed or presented from the Palmgren theory. Finally, the entire procedure is applied to a practical application.
