Abstract
The oil crises of the 1970s had a devastating impact on the economic viability of fibre makers, dye makers and textile processors. A major theme in the last quarter of the century has been the spate of mergers resulting from these changes and thus the authors have refrained from crystal‐ball gazing. Research and new product development have been both more selective and more costly since health and safety issues became primary concerns.
