Abstract

Albeit Balinese culture and tradition have been well known worldwide, the question concerning the relationship between the Hindu Dharma and the Balinese dwelling tradition remains less explored. What is dwelling in Hindu–Balinese culture? How do they deal with modernity? This chapter argues that Balinese culture and its dwelling tradition are dharma in action. In order to understand this connection, this chapter examines, unfolds, and dismantles the relationship between local concepts and the phenomena of dwelling and building. The material of the study was taken from the author’s fieldwork in the island of Bali in 1976, 1991, 2000, 2005, and 2010.
