Abstract

This article examines the aesthetics of time wrought through the cultivation of neglect, where dormancy, latency, and the mechanical failure of artifacts act to facilitate accumulations of dust on their fragile surface. Notions associated with the provenance of artifacts, their protection or subjection to dust, the creation of subtle patinas from once vital hues, and dust's function as a conduit from time past to the modern day are discussed through the writing of cultural theorist Celeste Olalquiaga.
