Abstract

Colloidal gas aphrons (CGA) was investigated as an application of dust removal. In this work, fly ash, wheat flour, and powder of polyvinyl chloride were examined. The effects of surfactant type, dust type and concentration, air flow, and CGA flow velocity on the dust collection efficiency were studied. The separation was performed as cocurrent operation in the separation column. It was found that nonionic surfactant (Triton X-100) yielded the highest collection efficiency of 95% compared with 90% obtained from cationic surfactant (CTAB) and 92% obtained from anionic surfactant (SDS). The mechanism of dust removal by CGA seemed to be dominated with aerodynamic capture. The collection efficiency increased with increasing of CGA flow velocity, and air flow velocity. However, it decreased with increasing of dust concentration, and air flow velocity higher than 6 m/s. The collection efficiency of large particle size was higher than that of small particle size.
