Abstract

Abstract Utilization of waste materials in construction field is of utmost importance as the cost of construction is rapidly increasing and natural resources are depleting. Increasing waste production, which affects the environment, can thus be reduced. This research presents the utilization of steel slag, waste material from steel manufacturing plant, as an aggregate in concrete. As concrete is meant to withstand and perform its function in various environmental exposures, here an attempt is made in finding the suitability of steel slag concrete, in various exposure conditions like mild, moderate, severe, very severe and extreme. The durability of steel slag concrete under various exposure conditions are compared with conventional concrete by conducting ultrasonic pulse velocity test, Rapid chloride penetration test, Sorptivity and acid resistance test. Steel slag concrete performs well in extreme conditions than the conventional concrete and hence, it can be used in very severe environments like tidal zone and sub soil structure
