Abstract

This paper presents a dual-input single-inductor dual-output (DISIDO) power management unit (PMU) with energy recycling/backup and SAR-based zero current switching (ZCS). The proposed PMU is based on combining energy from two different low-power energy-harvesting sources, piezoelectric and thermoelectric, using time division multiplexing, along with a rechargeable battery to enhance system’s dependability and continuity. The implemented architecture undergoes four states of operation, namely, harvest, backup, recycle and battery charge, using a reconfigurable switch matrix. In addition, the proposed converter operates in the discontinuous conduction mode with constant on-time (COT) and dynamic off-time (DOT). Moreover, a SAR-based ZCS technique is introduced. The proposed DISIDO converter was designed using 0.13 μm CMOS technology.
