Abstract

Summary During a study on the replication of cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV) in cell cultures, a dual infection with Chilo iridescent virus (CIV) was experimentally obtained in a Choristoneura fumiferana cell line. In dual infections, the number of polyhedra obtained by CPV in the C. fumiferana cell line is greatly enhanced (20-fold) during simultaneous infections with CIV. This synergism seems to be related to iridescent virus replication, since neither the culture medium of CIV-infected cells nor the protein extracts of CIV particles were reponsible for enhancing the production of CPV polyhedra. Electron microscopy kinetics clearly showed that both viruses may replicate in the cytoplasm. However, we were unable to observe the inclusion of CIV particles in the CPV polyhedra. The CIV obtained in dual infections present many empty capsids and aberrant formations.
