Abstract

This paper presents F-shape frequency reconfigurable planar monopole antenna. The antenna operates in multi frequency bands according to the user requirements. The design is based on monopole using FR4 substrate of thickness 1.6mm with a truncated ground plane. The reconfigurability is achieved by embedding switch in the radiating structure. The antenna operates at 3.19GHz and 4.1GHz when switch is in the OFF state. When switch is turned ON, antenna operates at 1.96GHz and 5.5GHz. The truncated ground plane is used to achieve high efficiency over 70%. The bandwidth of designed antenna (for return loss< −10 dB) is 239MHz at 1.9GHz, 652MHz at 3.19Ghz, 534MHz at 4.1GHz and 239MHz at 5.5GHz. The antenna has satisfactory gain values of 1.86dBi, 2.32dBi, 2.44dBi and 2.66dBi at the corresponding four resonating frequencies. The proposed monopole reconfigurable antenna is low profile, small size and low weight which can be used in smart electronic devices like tablets, laptops and smart phones. The antenna simulation is carried out using CST Microwave Studio.
