Abstract
ABSTRACT Rising drug trafficking in South Asia has become an increasing concern that directly and indirectly hampers the regional and national security of India. The paper assesses the gravity of this situation by providing a comprehensive overview of the drug problem in India to bring out the unique challenges. The study shows the importance that maritime security has in overcoming the complex security challenges and establishes the need for securitising the threat posed by drug trafficking via the sea route. The research further evaluates the counter-narcotic strategy and the maritime security architecture of India. The paper points out the grey areas which has not been addressed before which seriously hampers all the counter-narcotic measures taken by India. The study uses both qualitative and quantitative data to draw conclusions and highlight the challenges faced by India in securitising the threat posed by the rise in drug trafficking.
