Abstract

Trimethoprim, a broad spectrum antimicrobial medication, is a designated first-line treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI). Being a common presentation to primary care, this article will review the drug from a pharmacological perspective, considering both it's pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic properties. It will also discuss the nursing considerations in safely prescribing trimethoprim in clinical practice and include the thought processes involved in prescribing for renal patients, hepatic impairment, pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers. Finally, alternative therapies will be addressed, looking at both drug and non-drug options.
