Abstract
Adverse drug reactions account for 10-15% of undesirable events in hospitalized patients in the US. Out of these, about 3-5% are drug fevers, to be considered as an important differential diagnosis in undetected fever. The frequency is certainly underestimated by not recognizing the diagnosis! It may precede or accompany more severe side effects. Unrecognizing it prolongs hospitalization and increases costs: many unnecessary investigations (in an American study, late diagnosis was accompanied by an increased cost of investigations); cost treatments; the use of antibiotics increases the risk of side effects and selection of resistant germs; its nonrecognition during the treatment of an infection can create the false idea of therapeutic failure.
