Abstract
The paper presents a novel approach to driver’s fatigue recognition based on yawn detection using thermal imaging. This work writes into the active drivers’ assisting systems which can warn on driver’s drowsiness based on continuous observations. The method can operate in day and night conditions without distracting a driver due to usage of thermal images. At first, face alignment is done by detection of eye corners. Then, yawns are detected based on the proposed yawning thermal model. For quantitative evaluation an annotated image database was created which has been made publicly accessible. Experiments were performed in laboratory, as well as in real car conditions, showing high efficacy of the proposed method.
