Abstract
The management group of the International Crustal Research Drilling Group (ICRDG) (formally Iceland Research Drilling Project) met on December 7, 1979, at the Royal Society in London. They agreed to undertake two international major crustal drilling investigations during the first half of the decade 1980–1989. Both relate to a major interest of the group in the nature of and physical conditions of formation of oceanic crust. Important specific aspects of both projects are the thermal state of newly formed crust (and thence geothermal energy) and in the conditions of formation of base metal sulfide deposits on the ocean floor.
