Abstract

This essay contrasts how Philip Roth's American Pastoral and Toni Morrison's Paradise deploy postmodernism in their fictional accounts of life after the Civil Rights movement. Roth and Morrison disagree about the extent to which postmodernism can liberate historically marginalized people. Based on the analysis of these two novels, this essay concludes that even though Jews and African Americans have shared a history of exclusion in the United States, social change since the Civil Rights movement has caused their experiences to diverge.
