Abstract

Band mapping of Li by angle-resolved photoemission shows anomalous peak dispersion for near-uv photons, giving the false impression that an energy gap of about 1 eV is present just below the Fermi level. This is explained in terms of drastic line shape changes caused by interference between surface and bulk emission together with enhancements of these contributions for photon energies near the multipole surface plasmon and bulk plasmon energies, respectively.
