Abstract
AbstractDifferential PCM (DPCM) is a method use to encode analog information sources with greater efficiency than PCM. However, due to its characteristic decoding mechanism, where the decoded signal values depend on previous ones, DPCM is unsuitable for progressive decoding.This paper proposes a new method, “DPCM‐PCM Hybrid Coding,” which is highly efficient similar to DPCM and also is suitable for progressive decoding.The principle of the proposed encoding method is described and computer simulation results of its quantization error performance are presented. Finally, the performance of the encoding method proposed herein is compared with that of the conventional DPCM.
