Abstract

Structural failure in laminated composites is primarily due to the interlaminar debonding that results due to the transverse shear stresses and such scenario arises due to their inaccurate prediction by various shear deformation theories. In order to predict such stresses accurately and in a simple yet effective manner, the global local theories are employed. In this study, two such theories have been used for static response of smart laminated plates under electromechanical loading. Though both theories use the same principle of double superposition, one of them has been observed to predict better accuracy for all laminated plates subjected to both mechanical loading and electric potential loading conditions. The effect of inclusion of the piezoelectric coefficient in the transverse displacement assumption has been observed to yield much improved response.
