Abstract
Endoscopy techniques revolutionized the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for patients with GI diseases. The recent development of video endoscopy provides high-resolution video images and opens a new dimension in clinical gastroenterology. However, the small intestine remains the final frontier, and direct visualization of its lumen has not been satisfactory until recently. Two innovative techniques, capsule endoscopy and double balloon endoscopy (DBE), have enabled physicians to gain access to the small intestine. In the beginning of 2001, Yamamoto et al 1 Yamamoto H. Subsequently, a new system of double balloon enteroscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of small intestinal disorders was reported in 2003. 2 Yamamoto H. Sugano K.
